Spider Venom trailing to combat breast cancer

Let me bite your jubblies! (Photo from the Herald Sun)

A new Australian trial is already underway into whether venom from funnel webs and tarantulas can combat cancerous cells.

Venom molecules are frequently used in chronic pain prevention.

If the current trials are successful, a drug to fight breast cancer, could be available within five years.

The team will isolate up to 300 molecules in the venom and expose them to cancer cells to see how they react.

Spider venom contains molecules that have evolved to perform specific functions over millions of years. They are designed to target very specific sites and the scientists are hoping that some of these molecules can target cancer cells.

Freed tigers, lions and bears cause panic in Ohio (Talinart\Xandahar)

Exotic animals road warning ohio

Photo: Reuters

Terry Thompson, 62. Died.

But before he did he released his menagerie of 56 exotic animals onto his property and the surrounding Ohio countryside \townships. With the quiet farmland of Ohio rendered lousy with jungle animals, local police have had to hunt down the creatures and in some cases kill them, with more still on the loose.

Among the animals were 2 300 pound Bengal tigers, six black bears, two grizzlies, two wolves and 17 lions. A macaque monkey, possibly carrying the Herpes B virus, still remains at large. Sherifs were forced to kill many of the aggresive carnivores as they were “Large, adult and aggressive”, after tranquilizers proved wholey ineffective.

Mr. Thompson, who had been charged with animal cruelty 11 times since 2004, was found dead from an apparently self-inflicted wound when authorities went to the farm on Tuesday after reports of animals running free. They found gates and animal pens open, but no suicide note.

DISCUSSION:

Adulthood.

We’ve covered moving out and getting a job, but what does it actually mean to become an adult?
Do we ever really reach a stage where we count ourselves as grown up?

Or are we still just confused adolescents wondering why people are asking your opinion on important stuff  when all you’re really interested in is watching cartoon network and sleeping on the weekend.

Eric Ferrari’s Quote

The innocence of youth hit me like a truckload of bricks one recent morning when my 6-year-old cousin, Mariah, awoke, shook the sleep out of her eyes and with her first words of the day, said to me, “Wanna play soccer?”

She hadn’t been awake for 10 seconds, and she’s ready to go out and play. Par for the course for a doll of a girl whose single concern in life is how to amuse herself for the next 15 minutes.

SEGMENTS:

Fenris Rants – Video Games

In this episode, Fenris attempts to break daring new ground by going where no ranter has gone before: by beating a dead horse and discussing the least original thing imaginable. Unfortunately he couldn’t find a horse in any condition, so you’ll just have to make do with him making fun of Jack Thompson and other anti-video game crusaders.

Silent Paranoia – Occupy Melbourne

Ray gets caught up in the ‘Occupy Melbourne’ protests, an Australian subsidiary of the ‘Occupy Wallstreet‘ protests. Armed with only a microphone he finds out what the protest is all about.

Kell’s Wonderful Life – Lest we forget

November tinges Kell’s thoughts into remembrance, covering Remembrance Day, where Australians take the time to reflect on those lost at war.
